History

1936

In 1936, the Ladies of Shillong requested the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions to start a College in the hilly and educationally backward region. The Institution accepted the request and St. Mary’s Undergraduate College was established at Shillong. St. Mary’s College of Teacher Education (formerly known as B.T.) was also established at the same time.

1937

Affiliation to the Calcutta University was granted in April 1937 and classes commenced on 2nd July of the same year. The official opening of the College by Lady Reid accompanied by Sir, Robert Reid, Governor of Assam took place on 25th October 1937.

1948

In 1948, the College was affiliated to Guwahati University.

1973

In 1973 when the North-Eastern Hill University was established it was automatically brought under its jurisdiction.

1993

In 1993 the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) issued norms for Colleges of Teacher Education throughout the country.

2002

In order to comply with NCTE norms, bifurcation had to take place and a full-fledged B.Ed. College with separate principal and campus was created in 2002.

2014

The NCTE Regulations, 2014 notified enhanced duration of B.Ed. Programme.

2015

Commencement of a Two-year B.Ed Programme with an annual intake of 50 students for one basic unit

Contribution

Over the past eight decades it has been rendering yeoman services to the cause of teacher education in the North East. Numerous past trainees of the College, today, are contributing to society in various walks of life as Heads of Departments in Universities, Principals of Colleges and Schools, Members of Government Education Departments, Research workers and other administrative posts both in India and abroad. The College continues its efforts of imparting quality teacher education and producing teachers of excellence who are champions of values that transform society. The College endeavours to initiate new and creative ways in conducting professional and academic activities with competency and effectiveness.
